Let The Good Times Roll
So, this is Christmas for me! Tonight I get to see La Bamba and the Holiday Hurrah at the Stone Pony! La Bamba is a trombone player. When I took my son Ian to see Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes at a 4th of July show in 2006, I told him he should try to talk to La Bamba. Ian played the trombone in High School. I had a hard time encouraging Ian to be a musician, because I didn't even know anyone who played an instrument as a profession. La Bamba didn't disappoint and he was very encouraging when talking to Ian. To imagine Ian has played with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes and La Bamba is so amazing. I love a band with horns. When, we bought our first house in Manasquan it was on the same block as the Osprey. And, one of the bands that played there many summers was La Bamba and the Hubcaps. That is why I included this picture. I saw it on my way to work the other day, and had to take a picture.
This is a Christmas present to myself, to have tickets to see my son Ian included in the horn section. There will be twelve horn players! Many have played with that guy who just sold his library of music to Sony for 500 million dollars! But, being a horn player for Bruce, and Southside is so much more than that. It is RICH in the Jersey or Asbury Park music scene. It is called SOAP. Sounds of Asbury Park. And, Asbury Park has a rich history of music. One building on the boardwalk is named after a trombone player from the 20's. It is my favorite music and I am so glad I have this winter to go into Asbury Park and listen to music to be inspired. When I saw the Broadway musical Jersey Boys it also gave me appreciation of a band and the dynamics of friendship and financial hardships of forming and staying together as a band. And, when Frankie Valie realizes he is becoming successful. He exclaims "you mean I can have horn players on stage with me". That's when I realized how lucky we are to have live music and a lot of bands to enjoy with horn players in the area.
