Virtual Visit to the Museum of Modern Art

There are some museums that actually make me feel powerful.  I always end every visit gazing into Starry Night, by Vincent Van Gogh.  This visit was very special.  We went to the Brooklyn Museum and the MOMA.  Kaylyn did more research on our visit the night before, then I did.  She watched a movie on Cindy Sherman the night before.  Honestly, I don't like and could even say at times, I hate Contemporary or Modern Art.  But, with knowledge I grow to appreciate it.  So, as we walked around  Kaylyn really had to explain to me what I was seeing.  Cindy Sherman actually has an instagram account, which I now follow.  From time to time I will hear her name mentioned in a comedy and I am proud of myself for getting the joke.  Without this visit, I am sure I would have never known who she was or her work.
So, what kind of Art does Cindy Sherman create?  She is a photographer.  She uses herself as her subject.  She uses make-up, wigs, costumes and backgrounds to create all different pictures.  They are grouped by subject or time period.  She also uses filters and photo shop to distort her face and figure.  Some pictures are beautiful, but most are gruesome.  As, I walked from room to room I was hooked and fascinated.  It was powerful.  And, just by the experience I felt more powerful.  It was one my best experiences I have had in a museum and I owe it to my daughter and son for being able to enjoy it together.  It taught me a lot about how judgmental I am.  And, how something doesn't have to be beautiful to be pleasing.  It can be real and enjoyed, even if it is depicting something ugly.
When we walked to see Van Gogh and stared and gazed until we ready to go home, it felt extra special.  Van Gogh always makes me feel hopeful, sometimes troubled but then always peaceful.  I love the flow and colors of his work.  Always so grateful, he worked so hard and left us so many masterpieces to appreciate.

Quote for the day:
  • One touch of nature makes the whole world kin. We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature - trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence... We need silence to be able to touch souls.
