Virtual Visit to the Brooklyn Museum
This was the day after Christmas, Ian and Kaylyn's last year at U Arts. We all enjoyed this visit. I was surprised how big the Brooklyn Museum was. We took the train and Ian was really good navigating the subway to get there.
We mainly went to see the Mickalene Thomas Exhibit. It was described as dazzling and it really was. Those are all rhinestones in her work, which is hard to see. The name of the exhibit was the Origin of the Universe. There were 93 pieces of her work and I was stunned! She is from Camden, New Jersey, she used her mother as her muse, she bought the rhinestones from Michaels, and was born in 1971. Never in my wildest dreams after my college studies, did I ever think an exhibit like this would happen in my lifetime. It was powerful.
Another Powerful work is the dinner party. It's permanent home is now at the Brooklyn Museum. I know I saw it before when it had been traveling. It represents 39 female Artists with ceramic dinner plates and embroidery for each place setting at the table.
One of the Artist's featured at the Dinner Party is Georgia O'Keefe and Kaylyn and I went back to the Museum a few years ago to see the Georgia O'Keefe exhibit. It was fabulous, including the clothes she wore and her time periods in NYC and then New Mexico. The scallop in the bottom of the jacket and then the scallop on the frame was really something. The curator did that a lot. But, even just three white shirts were powerful, as she would design her own clothes and have them tailor made for her. My favorite was a denim dress and her sneakers. And then a photo of her wearing denim and jeans.
We ended the day with another exhibit of a Woman Artist, it was by Marilyn Minter and the exhibit was called "Pretty Dirty". Kaylyn really helped me see the beauty in Contemporary Art, which I never wanted to pay attention to. I am thrilled with the knowledge and how far women have come in the Art World the last decade.
Quote of the Day: Georgia O'Keefe: Nobody sees a flower - really - it is so small it takes time - we haven't time - and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time.
